PREP0004816
Overview
Measurement of pH in both neat and complex samples as well as construction of manometry system to
measure dissolved species that serve as the main buffering species in certain existing pH SRMs.
pH Metrology of High Ionic Strength Solutions
Qualifications
- A PhD in Chemistry or a related field.
- 4 years of relevant experience.
- Expertise in the use of Harned Cell to measure pH
- Expertise in fabrication of silver, silver chloride electrodes (thermal-electrolytic type) and platinum,
hydrogen electrodes - Expertise in gravimetric preparation of high ionic strength solutions
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Research Proposal
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Construction of complex manometry system similar to systems already operating at other
institutions - Troubleshoot system and perform comparison measurements to ensure system is operating
according to expectation - Measurement of pH in reference materials using Harned cell apparatus
- Fabrication of silver, silver chloride reference electrodes
- Platinization of platinum, hydrogen electrodes
- Measurement of gaseous samples extracted from solutions using manometry system to
determine effects on pH - Documentation of above activities according to NIST quality system where appropriate
